Last night the Independent front page deliberately avoided mentioning the Royal wedding. It didn’t even feature a picture of the happy couple (which The Guardian did). The I-paper, however, ran with it under the headline “Kate says: I Will” with the rather sycophantic stand -first “The wait is over: Prince William and Kate Middleton announce their engagement.”
This is something that we have seen quite a bit in the past few weeks. The Independent and the I-Paper go out of their way to have different headlines and front pages, even when one story dominates all the other newspapers. Does this mean that the Independent proper is changing its editorial line to fit in with the I?
And will this affect the sales of the Indy? Not having the Royal couple on the front page today surely hurts their revenue. Even those people that are not that bothered about the story will pick it up to have a look.
One final point. Does this mean that the I-paper is royalist while the Indy is republican? Maybe I am reading too much into it.
What do you guys think?
